Man had not yet learned to fly when H.G. Wells conceived this story of a Martian attack on England. Giant cylinders crash to Earth, disgorging huge, unearthly creatures armed with heat-rays and fighting machines. Amid the boundless destruction they cause, it looks as if the end of the world has come.

– plot hole
First off, I’m just so impressed that over 100 years ago, someone actually thought up this story! How Wells came up with the idea for this story, I don’t know, but it definitely blew me away. The writing is amazing, and surprisingly easy to read for a story that is already so old.
There is just one plot hole, at least in a way; it’s at the very least an easy way out to resolve the story. If you know the story, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If now, then I still haven’t spoiled anything.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in sci-fi, fantasy, and apocalyptic stories.
